How to design a creative quote graphic for social media

Love a great quote but stuck for design ideas? In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through a few simple steps to design a creative quote graphic for social media.

Sharing your favourite quotes can be a great way to engage your followers on social media. Start your own design and follow along as we create our quote!

Creative Quote Graphics

1. Choose your quote

In this exercise, we’ll use shapes and transparency to add some interest to our quote. The first step is to pick your quote. Shorter quotes work best, as you’ll have more room for your text to breathe.

For this example, we’ll take a quote from Lord of the Rings author, J.R.R. Tolkien:

“Not all who wander are lost” — J.R.R. Tolkien

Our first step is to separate our quote into several text boxes of different lengths and sizes. We then want to rotate them at slightly different angles. In this example, we’ve picked the font “Roboto Condensed”, a simple and effective typeface for social media graphics which we have bolded for further emphasis. We have also used a grey gradient background so our text can stand out.

2. Increase letter spacing

Next we want to increase the letter spacing. This gives our text more room to breathe. Increase the author’s name more than the rest of the text to create some contrast.

3. Add colored shapes to make your text pop

Canva makes it easy to find elements and icons to use in your designs. Click the ‘Search’ tab on the lefthand side, then drag the square onto your page from the shapes section. You’ll be able to resize it to fit around your text like we have done here and rotate them to the same angles you did for the text. Change the color.

Click ‘Back’ to send it behind the text.

4. Add transparent shapes

This is where things get fun! We can now duplicate our shapes, and change the color to black. Next, adjust the transparency to around 45 and by sending these layers to the back, you’ll get the same shadow effect we’ve produced here.

5. Now it’s your turn!
